Overheard Conversations
By Kate Graham
‘Overheard Conversations’ is a photo media project that addresses the significance of background noise on a persons experience in a space. How do the snippets of conversations we hear every day integrate themselves into our memories? And how do seemingly separate and arbitrary conversations organically overlap when held in close proximity? The artist explores these concepts by recording various lines of conversation overheard in a specific location, then screen printing the text onto a photo taken at said location on the same day.
Text:
Where is your comfort?
Head south.
Borrow a pen? Out.
May I help you? Now?
I refuse. The Lines.
Transendent.
3 miles, up up up.
Switchback.
You’ll go, I’ll help out.
Text:
Stories.
Don’t say no to evil.
Thou shall not not kill,
The moral collapse.
Don’t rock the boat.
Seatack to…
Bite our tongues.
When do you call out the educator?
Why do we get up every morning.
To do things?
Fit to be in society.
Objection.
Stay out of peoples lives.
Text:
Actually be productive.
Productive?
Office. Conversation.
Art.
Hire? Higher?
Family vs. related.
Relative.
Time or God
or me.
Strange Language.
Concept of costume
vs
uniform.
‘Sight Seeing’ was a street art project where various hand made posters were wheat pasted onto buildings in downtown Portland. Each poster contained a painting of the original landscape where Portland now sits, overlaid with a stencil of the downtown skyline.
For the guerrilla art installation ’28 Flags’ 28 gold painted army men, one for each country currently in NATO, were placed across Portland, OR. Each army man was left next to a piece of litter to defend. The piece explores western views and ideals towards war and national security.
